Rule for mandatory play

I roll a 6 and 2:

Do I have to have to play both pieces or can I move the 2, only if the 6 is to a point covered by my oppenent?
Example:
Both pieces can move 2 points.
The 6 point is covered by my opponent.
Question:
Can I move one piece 2 points and declare that I cannot move the 6?
Or, do I have to move the 2 first and then move the 6 to the open point?

If you can move both dice you have to. Only if you can move 1 OR the other you have to move the higher dice number (this happens rarely, every some dozen games).

Thanks, so just to be clear,
I have 2 pieces on one point.
On a 6/2 roll, and the 6 is covered, and the and 2 is open, I have to move one piece 8, if the 8th point is open

if you show us the board it is probably much easier. So I'm not sure to what you are referring.

A good idea would be to use a good Backgammon program, set up the position and check which moves are legal.
