RE:What is a backgammon dropper and what can I do about it?

A backgammon dropper is a person who purposely leaves an online backgammon game at a crucial moment to save losing points. This is a form of cheating that is not tolerated within the online backgammon community. Sometimes of a person disappears from the game it can be a genuine reason such as a disconnection. This is common with some dial up internet connections and can take time to reboot or get connected again. Be patient in this scenario.

"Dropper" or "Quitter" as what others call it is a player that quits before losing a match/game, maybe they just can't accept it or they can't continue playing knowing that they'll not win. You may find them in every on-line game so sometimes it's just normal but I do get irritated playing with those droppers out there.

Did you think about asking the source of this information that your opponent was a backgammon dropper about how he knows this or for more information? Maybe you should have told your opponent that you received this tip from the beginning and that if he was planning on dropping then you would rather not start the game? Either this sort of comment would cause your opponent to drop immediately so you wouldn’t have to waste your time playing the game until he dropped or it would prevent him from dropping at all. If you would rather not start any troubles you can tell your opponent that you received an anonymous tip and you don’t have to mention the name of the player who told you that your opponent is a dropper. I also should say that I think it’s better not to worry about droppers. You will enjoy the game much more if you spend your time enjoying the game and not being so nervous.......

Some good advice and it will probably work. However I feel that this is a rather paranoid way of dealing with a problem that at worst is just a minor annoyance. If someone drops on you just find someone else to play with.

well, i think that is why it is called a dropper because it does drop or quit. but then some may not also prevent it due to a problem in internet connection.

In what ever game it may be, you can always find a person who will cheat you. So you cannot always say that just because he lost internet connectivity, he was dropped. He may have done it intentionally too.

i agree cogbuddy. maybe the first thing that will come to our minds is that the player intentionally dropped the game. but then we might never know if the player did that unintentionally or with intentions.

I have to agree, that you should never have to give a person an option. Although it sounds really good I am not sure that I would really do something like that.

Can you take notes on players on these sites? If so, mark a potential "dropper" and avoid playing them if it persists and it annoys you enough. Not sure if you can do that.
