How would a person be able to tell that they have moved from a beginner status to an intermediate level of playing? I am not sure if there a way of telling this and comparing two people so you can see it from the beginning of the game.

Only way to find out is by playing other people or a computer programme like GNU. Their is a rating system FIBS which many online systems use.
